The photographs in this book offer a great view of steam locomotives in Detroit and the Great Lakes Region in the pre-World War II era. They are part of The William R. Dewey, Jr. Collection of locomotive photographs. William “Bill” R. Dewey Jr. was a photographer and collector of railroad photographs. His railroad photograph collection consists of 274 black and white negatives taken by him and others and are part of the Great Lakes Railway Historical Collection. Bill was an active trader of negatives as that was part of the railroad photography hobby at the time. Fifty-five different railroads are represented in the Dewey Collection. Seventy-nine photographs of Pere Marquette Railway, Wabash Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central Lines, Detroit & Mackinac Railway, Canadian National Railways, Canadian Pacific Railway, Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and other railroads in Detroit and the Great Lakes Region are included in this book.
